Tree Felling Bluff covers the whole headland, from Fynnland and Ocean View along the ridge to Brighton Beach, Treasure Beach and Wentworth.
Tree Felling Bluff is coastal work on a ridge. The seaward side takes the full force of the wind and salt, the stands are often steep, and much of the original vegetation is dune forest that is still growing in and around the gardens.
What the Job Involves
Wind shapes the trees and the job. Trees on the ridge lean inland, carry dead wood on the seaward side and fail in strong south-westerlies, so a lot of the work here comes after a cold front rather than a summer storm.
Knowing the species matters. The Bluff has milkwoods and other indigenous dune trees in many gardens, and some of what looks like overgrowth is protected, while some of it is invasive and should go.
Send the area, a rough height and a photo of the tree taken from a few metres back. Companies covering Bluff quote you directly.

- Brazilian pepper — Declared invasive that takes over coastal slopes.
- Casuarina — Beefwood windbreaks that become tall and brittle.
Tree Felling Bluff Price Guide
| Job | Indicative range | What moves it |
|---|---|---|
| Small tree, up to 5 m | R850 – R2 500 | Open access, one drop zone |
| Medium tree, 5 – 10 m | R2 500 – R6 500 | Whether it can be dropped whole |
| Large tree, 10 – 20 m | R6 500 – R15 000 | Rigging, roof and wall clearance |
| Very large tree, 20 m+ | R12 000 – R25 000+ | Crane or MEWP hire if needed |
| Sectional dismantle near a structure | +30% – 60% | Every piece lowered on ropes |
| Stump ground out afterwards | R600 – R3 000 | Diameter and machine access |
| Green waste removal | R650 – R3 500 | Bakkie load through to truck load |
These are indicative market ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African tree service pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not the rate card of any company on this platform, and no figure here is a commitment by anyone.
A tree that is close to a house, a boundary wall or power lines is priced on the rigging and the risk rather than on its height, so two trees of the same size on different properties can quote very differently. An on-site look is what turns a range into a number.
What Pushes the Price Up on the Bluff
- Steep stands on the seaward side of the ridge
- Protected milkwoods and dune vegetation
- Salt-damaged dead wood that slows climbing
- Narrow roads and parking for the chipper
Permits and Protected Trees
Street and verge trees on the Bluff belong to eThekwini Municipality and are maintained by its Parks, Recreation and Culture Unit. A tree on the pavement is not yours to prune or remove, even if it is dropping leaves into your pool, lifting your driveway or shading your solar panels, and cutting one yourself can land you in trouble with the municipality. If a verge tree is a problem, report it to eThekwini on 031 311 1111, or on the defect line 080 131 3013 if it has already come down and is blocking the road.
Two other rules run alongside that. Species protected under the National Forests Act, including the white milkwood, need a licence from the national forestry department before removal, whoever owns the land and wherever the tree stands. Declared invasive species run the opposite way — there is a legal duty to control them, which is why Brazilian pepper, syringa, camphor and umbrella tree removals are rarely refused. Jacaranda sits in between: existing trees in urban areas may stay, but the species is listed and replanting is not permitted. The Bluff is coastal dune forest country. White milkwoods are protected under the National Forests Act, and clearing indigenous bush close to the shoreline or the Bluff Nature Reserve can need environmental authorisation. Estates, body corporates and homeowners' associations frequently add their own approval process on top of the municipal one. Check which of these applies before booking, not after.
Not sure whether your tree needs a permit? Describe it in the quote request and ask the companies that respond — it costs nothing to check.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does tree felling on the Bluff cost?
Most residential jobs land between R2 500 and R15 000. The band depends far more on what is underneath the tree than on the tree itself — a 12 m tree with a clear drop zone is a fraction of the cost of the same tree overhanging a roof, because the second one has to come down piece by piece on ropes.
Can a tree be felled close to my house?
Yes, but not by dropping it. It gets climbed or reached with a MEWP and taken down in sections, each piece roped and lowered rather than allowed to fall. That is slower and costs more, and it is the correct method when there is a roof, a boundary wall, paving or a pool underneath.
Do you take the wood away?
Ask before you accept a quote — this is the most common reason two quotes differ. Some include full removal of timber and brush, some leave the wood stacked on site, and some charge separately for haulage. Get it in writing either way.
What about the stump?
Felling normally leaves a stump at ground level. Grinding or excavating it out is a separate line item. If you are going to pave, plant or build over the spot, deal with the stump in the same visit — bringing a machine back later costs more than doing it while the crew is on site.
Do I need permission to remove a tree in my own Bluff garden?
For a tree inside your boundary, usually not — unless it is a species protected under the National Forests Act, such as a milkwood, or your estate, body corporate or title deed says otherwise. A tree on the pavement is a different matter entirely: those belong to eThekwini Municipality and only the municipality may touch them. Check which side of the wall the trunk is on before you book anything.
How do I get quotes for Tree Felling Bluff?
Describe the tree once — rough height, what is underneath it, and how close a vehicle can get — and add a photo taken from a few metres back so the whole tree is in frame. Companies covering the area receive it and quote you directly. It is free and there is no obligation to appoint anyone.
